The murder of George Floyd by a police officer in Minneapolis, and the continuous protests since, once again show the tear through American society: That the Declaration of Independence’s proclamation that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights” has not held true for all.

Racism and discrimination are a painful reality for black Americans. Much is still to be done in order to realize the "more perfect Union,” as stated in the U.S. Constitution. 

REFORMS: Without a doubt, this includes that those in political positions use their influence and authority to call for calm, address the necessary reforms, and not exacerbate social tensions. This responsibility begins with the President in the White House.

However, though the domestic political situation and social climate are charged, and large problems remain, the requiems over American democracy are, as always, too soon. Europe, and particularly Germany, would be wise to refrain from giving too much unsolicited advice across the Atlantic.

CHALLENGES: It’s not the case that similar problems and challenges don’t exist here. Though the situation is currently very difficult, it should be remembered that American democracy has time and again throughout its history demonstrated its self-healing powers and reinvented itself.

There is no reason to doubt that the U.S. will again succeed this time and come closer to fulfilling the promise of America.
